Criminal Justice

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the history and structure of the criminal justice system. This course presents an overview of for students interested in pursuing a career in the criminal justice field and the various career opportunities, both sworn and non-sworn) available at the local, state and federal levels. Students will examine aspects of policing, the investigative process, corrections, public safety and America’s courts. Students will practice written and verbal communication skills and other workplace readiness skills to better prepare them for the workforce.

Professional Visits: 

Students will be exposed to professionals and subject matter experts in the field and on campus and will participate in exercises designed to offer a realistic view of the contemporary issues facing law enforcement. We will study United States Supreme Court decisions and complex legal issues relevant to the Rule of Law.

Through lecture, video, out-of-class experiences, and guest speakers, students will explore current trends in law enforcement training, officer safety and wellness, and the high demands and extraordinary sacrifices associated with public safety. Topics will include studying real-life cases of violent crime, gang violence, and terrorism. This course is designed to instill the importance of leadership, honesty and integrity, responsibility, respect, and professional ethics.
