Cybersecurity affects every individual, organization, and the nation.  This program offers an excellent introduction into the world of cybersecurity.  Knowledge from this course gives the student an advantage when continuing their education into data security at the community college, four-year university or military level. The class begins by defining cybersecurity with the understanding that securing data goes far beyond securing computer networks.  Physically securing private information is equally important as securing data digitally.  Students will use Project Based Learning methods to investigate social engineering methods and realize that the weakest link to data is the employee.


This course will offer students a basic knowledge in the field of computer networking and methods to secure data on a network.  Students will learn simple programming using the BasicStamp v2 language as they program “Boebots” to behave in a prescribed manner. Malware, encryption, and offensive/defensive security software are topics the student will research in-depth to further their understanding of basic cybersecurity practices. Students will also receive an introduction to the use of virtual machines on a virtual network using the Virginia Cyber Range.

Recommended Skills to Possess:

  • Possess excellent reading, math, and problem-solving skills as students will need to read and comprehend large quantities of technical material. 

  • Excellent oral communication skills are needed to effectively work with colleagues and customers. 

  • Be able to work in a team environment and have the initiative to work without direct supervision.

  • Patience is an asset because some computer/network malfunctions occur intermittently, thus determining the cause is often difficult to pinpoint. 

  • A basic level of computer hardware, software, and peripherals knowledge would be a benefit to a networking student.
