This course will offer students a basic knowledge in the field of computer networking and methods to secure data on a network. Students will learn simple programming using the BasicStamp v2 language as they program “Boebots” to behave in a prescribed manner. Malware, encryption, and offensive/defensive security software are topics the student will research in-depth to further their understanding of basic cybersecurity practices. Students will also receive an introduction to the use of virtual machines on a virtual network using the Virginia Cyber Range.

Excellent oral communication skills are needed to effectively work with colleagues and customers.
Be able to work in a team environment and have the initiative to work without direct supervision.
Patience is an asset because some computer/network malfunctions occur intermittently, thus determining the cause is often difficult to pinpoint.
A basic level of computer hardware, software, and peripherals knowledge would be a benefit to a networking student.
